Just Google it! It could be said that the ultimate sign of a brand’s influence is that if its name becomes a common verb in everyday life. Google is by far the most visited website in the world, receiving around 276 million unique monthly visitors in the U.S. alone.
Here are five Google facts that are sure to “rank” high in your memory (and that I Googled to find):
- There are 5.9 million Google searches per minute. (source) That equates to 8.5 billion searches a day and 3.1 trillion a year. This is even more intriguing considering that 15% of daily Google searches are brand new (as in never been Googled before).
- Google’s name was originally BackRub. (source) Why BackRub? They called it that because Google’s programming analyzed the web’s “back links” to determine how important a website is, and therefore how high it ranks. Can you imagine if they stuck with BackRub? We would be saying “just BackRub it”!
- One of the most-searched terms on Bing is Google. (source) Leave Bing alone! It has been humiliated enough by Google’s supremacy.
- Google’s first doodle was a Burning Man figure. (source) The inaugural doodle began as an out-of-the-office message from founders Page and Brin in August 1998 to let people know they were attending the Burning Man festival.
- The Google Search index is well over 100,000,000 gigabytes in size. (source) The index contains hundreds of billions of webpage entries. There is an entry for every word seen on every webpage indexed.
